Payouts
When and how does our charity get paid?
Updated October 30, 2026
Where the money comes from
People sell things they no longer need on Clutter Sale and choose a share of each sale for a nonprofit. A seller who picks you gives you at least 10% of their share of the sale, which is what is left after the platform fee and card processing. They can give more. One listing can support up to three nonprofits. We do not take a cut of your part.
How you are paid
Through a Stripe account in your organization's name, which you connect from your dashboard. Clutter sends your share to that account, and Stripe moves it on to your bank on Stripe's own schedule. That last step is Stripe's, so we cannot tell you the exact day it reaches your bank.
When you are paid
Your share is sent when the sale completes, at the same moment as the seller's share. A sale completes when the buyer confirms they have the item, or by itself 24 hours after a photographed handoff if the buyer says nothing. Today there is no extra waiting period after that. A waiting period exists as a setting that could be turned on if fraud made it necessary; if it is, it applies to the seller's share and yours alike.
What has to be in place first
Money for your charity can always come in. It is paid out only when all of these are true:
- Your charity has been approved.
- Stripe setup is finished: your details are submitted and Stripe has turned on payouts.
- The Stripe account is set up as an organization, with your EIN on it.
- The organization name on the Stripe account matches your name in the IRS records, and Stripe has not flagged a problem with your EIN.
- Payouts are not paused. They are paused if the IRS stops listing your charity as tax-exempt.
We email you when your payout account is verified.
If you are not set up yet
Your share is held for you rather than lost. That applies if your charity has not joined, is part-way through signing up, is waiting for review, or is approved but Stripe is not verified yet. As soon as the last condition is met, everything held for you is sent automatically. You do not have to ask. If a transfer fails for a passing reason, it is retried every 30 minutes.
If your charity already has a page you didn't create
Sellers can choose any 501(c)(3) in the IRS list, so your charity may have a page, and money set aside, before anyone from your team has signed in. You can claim it from a link we send you, or by signing up with your EIN. If a claim link has run out, ask us for a new one; the money set aside for you does not run out with the link.
If a sale is refunded
Your share from that sale is taken back, and the donor's receipt for it is cancelled.
Donor receipts
The seller receives a donation receipt automatically when the sale completes, with your name, EIN and address on it. You do not need to issue one.
